  • Lowering my Sportster

    Submitted by user kpreese

I love my 2003 Sportster but I sure would like a lower stance. It might mean a sacrifice of some handling (reduced ground clearance, etc.), but it would look better and the bike is plenty capable of handling more than I intend to push it. I just like to cruise and enjoy the occasional quick redlight blast. I am considering having a shop rake the neck to 35 degrees and then installing a set of 3 degree trees. That combination with the factory length fork tubes would lower the front end and give a little over 8 degrees more rake than stock yet maintain close to stock trail. If that materializes, I'll post a project to give more details, pictures and impressions. In the meantime, I'm too impatient, so I am lowering it using the Harley-Davidson factory parts used on the Sportster "Hugger" model for both front and rear. I could be wrong about this being factory Hugger parts, so here are the part numbers: Qty 2 needed - Rear shock assembly 54568-92 Qty 1 needed - Low suspension fork kit (with shorter Jiffy stand) 45480-94 I ordered these from Surdyke H-D because of their prices. Shipping was not all that prompt though it was clear on their site that this would be the case, so no real complaint there. Save some money and order from them, just order early. One last note: It wasn't clear on the site that the rear shock was a single so I ordered only one. I either wait another 2 weeks for the second one or go to a local dealer and pay a little more. As luck would have it, the New Port Richey H-D dealership has 1 of these beauties in stock so I'll be grabbing it first thing tomorrow (25% higher price though).

  • Lepera Bare Bones on 2003 Sportster

    Submitted by user kpreese

I wasn't happy with the "puffy" solo seat that came on my 2003 Harley-Davidson Sportster. Not only was it a bit ugly, it was uncomfortable for me on longer rides. It looks comfortable, but just wasn't for some reason. Though photos were hard to come by, the best looking solo seat I had seen was the Lepera Bare Bones seat. After installation, my first ride was a good 2 hour test and I am quite happy with it. Without a doubt, I love the way the seat feels when I first hop on it. I was relieved to find it was fine for the duration of that first 2 hour ride. It is a FIRM seat so DON'T EVEN THINK about getting this seat without the BikerGel. With the BikerGel, it conformed to my . . uh . . surface quite nicely. I didn't find myself fidgeting about after an hour like I did on the stock seat. Installation couldn't have been easier though I had a bit of trouble removing the sissy bar that the previous owner had installed by H-D. I figured I'd share the project more as a product review since installation was so easy and also as a way to post a picture or two for others looking for that "right" seat. By the way, this is NOT the LT version of this seat that rises in the front to meet the tank. I prefer the look of the original version.

  • Screamin' Eagle Air Cleaner

    Submitted by user kpreese

The instructions are adequate, but some pictures of an installation of a Screamin' Eagle Air Cleaner would probably be helpful for some folks, so here ya' go. I installed this on my 2003 Sportster. The kit fits quite a range of years though there were a handful of other parts and steps for installation on other years that I didn't need. While I had the air cleaner off, I also drilled out the tamper-resistant plug that covers the low-speed fuel adjustment screw on the carburetor. If I ever get around to actually adjusting that to improve the off-idle ultra lean sputtering I get until she warms up, I'll post it as another project.
