There is the motor before I began to work on it. It runs ok mechanicaly. I want to rebuilt the carb and clean the ignition system a bit. Seems to run great otherwise. The lower leg had been sitting in the water quite some time, and the rest of it is badly faded from the sun.
The marine growth ate through much of the paint and some of the primer. I thought I could simply clean it with a litte dilluted vineagar, but then I realized i was down to bare metal.
Took a few different sized metal tools that fit into my drill, and took off all the loose paint that I could. Was able to smooth out some of the nics and dings that were on the leg, and hammerd the anti ventilation plate back into shape.
The cowl shows many signs of how old it is. It is badly faded, and has many scratches and dings. In the corners and other edges the paint is worn through to the fiberglass, and the metallic blue luster is gone from the lower accent.
Put about 4 coats of primer on the cowl and the pieces of the cowl that I removed. I gently sanded it first and gave it a decent cleaning to remove all the grease and dirt.
After the 4 coats of primer, I added 3 coats of White Gloss. I then Taped off the areas I want to keep white and put on 2 coats of the Blue color I chose. I think I may put on 1 or 2 more coats of blue, and then will go on to clearcoating the whole cowl.
Here is a closer view of the blue I am using. It has metal flake in it, which is really turning out nicely.
Just the clear coat left to do.....not sure how many coats it will take. I'm very happy with the results so far. Once the zinc chromate arrives I will get going on the rest of this motor. Until then Ill get the cowl a little more perfect :)
4 coats of clear are on there and its looking great. Attached the plastic decals with some heavy duty silicone contact adhesive, covering up the dowls on the inside of the cowl with all purpose clear silicone. Last step is the vinyl letters
I still have not gotten the zinc chromate needed for the parts of the leg that will be below the waterline. I have started the upper leg and lower pan.
I sanded off the loose pieces, and then etched the aluminum surface to help bond with the primer. I used a 50/50 vinegar water solution. I then primed and painted 2 coats of the chosen paint. 2 coats will be all that I do, as it looks just fine. This pic is after one coat........
I finally got the zinc primer. It was cool out so I had to paint then take the motor down to the basement to dry a bit. I etched the metal with the 50/50 vinegar water solution first. This pic is after 2 light coats. Sometime in the next few days I will get the topcoat painted and be pretty much finished. With the motor anyways....
Just a better view of the overall progress....so far I am pleased.
Here is a close up shot of the lower unit. After the primer dried for 24hrs, I painted the final coat of paint. I touched up the propeller as well. It looks ok for now, but I will be replacing it soon.
Here is a picture of her up and running. It took a bit of work to finally get her going. I replaced the lower unit oil, the plugs, and cleaned up the points. I put some new plugs in, and hooked it up. It still would not fire. I then realized the throttle linkage was loose, fixed that and finally the motor would fire when the throttle was in "start".
Got the new vinyl decals on the cowl today. It took only two days to get here after they were cut and designed..........and they look awesome. I am putting a few coats of clear over them to help protect them
