Thanks Dad!

Shes home!

One evening my Dad called me and asked if i wanted his old boat? I answered well yes! It has been sitting covered beside his garage since 1996.Racoons made it their home wasps, mice etc for years.Destroyed most of the upolstery seats etc. This is the day i brought it home from its 11 year nap. Brought it home last day of sept 07.I am going to do a total restore of boat motor and trailer.

Sat in that seat many times.

Somebody lived here

Its a start

Looking better already

Left stern

Right stern

Beautiful Michigan fall day for this.

Getting better

The last of the panels are off!

Time to start ripping up the carpet and see what shape the deck is in? Got some serious wood rot!

Wasted!

Nasty!

I believe the majority of this was caused by livewell splashing etc.

Good enough for a template

Getting down to the wood

Getting there!

Rod compartment not too bad of shape wood seems good.

Shouldnt be to hard to redo.

Removed rod compartment and carpet off walls

There was some carpenters in there already! They love rotted wood!

Time to get the main deck boards out.

This is gonna be fun!

Oh boy what a strucure!

With some coaxing and cussing got it all out of there!

Well she is pretty much gutted!

Time to clean this mess up! Going to be dark soon!

This is where I left off! Moved it to a neighboors garage he was kind enough to rent me real real cheap for the winter.Hope to get some more done this sunday.

10/28/07 Got all the old parts over to the garage.

The old deck, going to use for templates.

Guess I will start in the bow and work my way back stripping old glue and carpet backing.

Had to remove some of this foam to get the rest of the old carpet out.

Going to try this product see how it works out?

I feel its coming off pretty good!

Looking much better! Going to keep doing this then get some wire wheels for my drill and clean it up better.

All nestled in her winter home! Still tickled that this happened.

Just another view.Small garage so it should be easy enough to keep warm with my kerosine heater.

The old Johnson still looks pretty good! Some maintenance and some cosmetic work she should be just fine!Well another sunday came and went! Post some more progress as it happens.

Had a bit of time to kill this evening.Wanted to try out this teak cleaning kit I got.

Night and day difference! It was thirsty.

This is the look I am looking for!

This is what it looks like once it has dried. Now from what I have read at Iboats from others I want to oil it up! And get it back to the color and richness I want. From what I have learned is it requires oil often to maintain it.Well I have a bunch more pieces to do yet.

Well its sunday 11/4/07 was deciding wether to go to the shop and continue on removing old glue and listen to the NASCAR Texas race on radio?Or stay home watch the race while sanding more teak pieces?Well as you can see decided to stay home!

Messy and time consuming.

Other than two large strips up at the shop i got them all sanded.
Will put them through the cleaning process as above later tonight or next chance i get.

Well found some time to get back at it.Didnt get anything done last weekend on it due to the better half being sick in the hospital overnite.Going to resume removing the old carpet glue and backing.

Got some new goodies down at the ole Walmart.

This product turned out to be the best.Better than the much more expensive strip it product. Then again its more for paint removal.I am removing old glue and carpet backing.Make sure you have plenty of "ventilation".I was pretty cold doing this job because i had the garage door open during the whole process.

Not looking to get it perfect.Just clean enough to get a good surface for the new carpet and glue to stick to later.

I believe i have accomplished my goal on it.

Nice clean surface!

Next chance i get i am going to get the otherside cleaned up same way.

I will be glad to get this part of the project done.Atleast now i know what works should go pretty good.

The neighboor i am renting the garage from runs a resale shop in front of the building. He had this laying around.I gave him twenty bucks for it.This should make a nice base for the motor stand that will have to built later on.

Solid stuff! Well worth a twenty. The wheels would have costed way more than that im sure.Thats it for now! This is gonna be a long project one step at a time.

11/29/07 Got a chance to get over and clean up the port side.

When i get ready to put the new carpet in i will go over it all again with the goof off and a rag.For now this part of the project is done.

My friend Andy M is loaning me this heater for the winter. This is gonna make for some toasty work days on the project. Thanks Andy!

I think my next step is going to be removing the windshield.I am doing this for two reasons, the first being to make painting the consoles easier to paint, second it will be easier to replace the glass and polish the frame work i believe.

12/2/07 Using a thin small flat screwdriver i removed the plastic molding strips vey carefully.

Got all four molding strips removed without incident, though this last one was a bit more challenging with the horn and old ship to shore antenna bracket in the way.

All but one stuborn screw was easily with old faithful. The stuborn one took a little extra attention but was removed.

Removed the two bolts holding the brace from the console.

One down one to go!

And the otherside off!

Mission accomplished windshield removed.Tucked them away until its time to replace the glass with lexan or whatever i learn is best to replace them with?

Got some time left to burn.Going to get this rub rail removed. It is old and beat up and needs to come off for painting anyway.

Just a few screws to remove the cap to get to it.

Ok one more screw and we can start pulling the old rub rail out.

Although it broke off due to rot and such in pieces it was fairly easy to remove.

Got it all out both sides.I am hoping the new stuff slides in easy but i got a feeling it wont be.

Removed the old bow light.Panning on replacing it with the new plug in style or just a new one like this.Figure it out when i get there.

Removed the old radio antenna bracket.

This will be the next area to dig into.

To address this problem!

Also will be cleaning this area up and checking everything out.

The oil resivor will have to come out and be cleaned up after disposing of the old oil.

I got curious and removed the cowling not knowing what to expect.Mice or wasp nest. But to my suprise everything looks good and clean for as long as its been sitting.

I grabbed a hold of the flywheel and turned it a bit by hand. From what i have read that is a good sign.

12/13/07 Found some time this afternoon for the project.Going to be removing all this foam out of here to gain acess to the otherside of the tie downs on transom.

My weapons of choice.

Man this isnt gonna be fast.

Another nest up in here.

Got to them. The wood is rotted bad.Going to have to replace the wood support spacer.

Cant believa all this was in that small area.

Six screws removed the battery tray. And gave me acess to the screws for the wood panel.

Time to remove the oil resevore.

Just four screws and two nuts to remove it.

Laid the oil pump out on a clean paper towel.

Two lag screws and the tiedown bracket is removed.

Oneside done one to go!

Placed the oil pump in a clean handy Walmart bag.

Now for this side.

Found another nesting spot. And they liked snickers lol.

Due to the critter that lived in there hollowing it out and making a cave this side went pretty fast.

This side looks much better. But it is still going to get new wood.

Going to have to get some more goof off and get these areas cleaned up soon.

Up in the gunnel yet another couple nests.

What a mess.

Next trip over i will be removing the last piece of deck wood, then cleaning all this mess up and give the shop vac a workout! So much to do so little time.
