1973 MFG Gypsy 14

ain't she a beauty?

here she is, the day i brought her home.

bow

that grip tape DEFINATLY needs to be replaced, otherwise she just needs a good cleaning in the front. i plan to fabricate some coushins for the bow seats.

helm

the depth finder is pretty poorly placed, and the switches for lights, bilge, etc are pretty old and need replacing. i plan to relocate the depth finder and add a 4 gang rocker switch panel and a stereo.

stern

the interior is in very good shape. the floor is solid, so i am not going to touch it. the carpet is newer and installed very well. i plan to change to a dual battery setup, mounting them in battery boxes as well as fabricating a tie down strap for the gas tank (and probably adding a 2nd tank as well).

not a bad motor...

the motor is a 1973 evinrude 50 hp. i have not run it yet. the previous owner says they were on the water and the prop would spin, but not enough to move the boat. sounds like a spun hub. the downside is the PO attempted to fix not knowing what the problem was and was in the process of removing the lower unit and broke 2 bolts.

new motor stand

i found the plans for this motor stand on iboats. works awesome. prop is off, next up is to get the lower unit off.

another motor view

the 73 evinrude 50 hp looks decent. the cowl is going to be stripped and repainted. i am only going to hit the rest of the motor with some rubbing compound to restore the shine, as the paint is not bad and i like the color.

motor with cowl off

it looks to have been well taken care of. its very clean, and the wiring is in great shape.

inventory

EVERYTHING out of the boat, taking inventory. the seats will stay, but i need to build a frame to raise them up. they are VERY low to the ground, and even as short as i am its har to get on and off them.

bow

the bow needs a good scrubbing with comet or bleach. the black spots are mildew and should come off pretty easily with a little elbow grease. isnt that what kids are for??

helm switches

these switches are a little out dated and worn out, so i am going to replace with a 4 gang panel. i am going to relocate the depth finder to where the switches are now, and mount the panel to the left of it.

passenger side

you can see where i removed the origional dealer emblem. i think i might relocate it somewhere else to add a stereo here.

interior 1

the interior, with the seats removed. i went over every inch of the floor, and it is solid all the way around. again, a little clean up and good to go.

interior 2

again, pretty clean. im gonna hit it with the shop vac and maybe clean the carpet with our portable shampoo machine (as long as the wife doesnt kill me!)

well

in good shape, and again in need of a good cleaning. i would like to make this as neat and clean as possible. the transom is very solid, so no work to do there.

clean well

the well, after a good cleaning

cleaning

its amazing what a little comet does...

bow seating

all nice and clean. amazing difference.

helm

everything stripped. the depth finder will be relocated and a new switch panel will be installed.
