Stejcraft 4.1m Halfcab gut&reco
I love the design and handling of this boat, and the fact that its only 4 meter but you can sleap in it. 2 bunks that are long enough. I have looked at a lot of modern boats up to 5m or more that you cant do that. Have spent many nice hot summer nights, as well as bad weather out in this boat. I new the floor and transom was rotten but I felt it was worth keeping to resore since I realy havent seen much as versatile as this in modern boats, and dont want to spend 30- 40 grand either.
The 90HP crysler was a power machine but had a lot of anoying problems and fixes. Its still taking up space here actually. Replaced it with a 75 evenrude that was perfect until the old girl blew up from the inside out. Center cylinder conrod bearing exploded, then the piston and conrod...evacuated.
But the engine kept going on top and botom cylinder while throwing water out the gaping hole in the block.
Ahhh, memories.
Strip the boat of everything. Most fittings and all electrics to be replaced.
Remove the rear deck.
To seperate the deck from the hull. I carefully used a jig saw with metal cutting blade to get through the stainless staples used to fasten the deck and hull together. The backwash well was'nt realy bonded with the transom very well and seperated with a fair go of prising and persuasion. Thankfully.
After this bit I added 4 supports (4X2) to keep the hull steady and minimise movement. 1 on each corner and 1 each side near were I cut the deck.
I used the jig saw to cut out the floor in sections, and mounted a wood block to the jig saw plate to shorten the cutting blade to prevent hitting the hull were the floor meets the hull.
I chipped it all out with a hammer and chisel. Slitting the ply and prising it off, Carefully when I got down to the glass.
The transom wood was bonded to the transom with chopped strand mat but was'nt done very well. The fibreglass was dry and applied with un even resin causing the rot from the wood to spead into the abbsorbant fibreglass. Its going to be tricky removing all that. You can see the bare area of transome were I was able to tare some away were it has delaminated from the transom. I guess the only thing to do is to grind it all off.
Leaving bearers in untill the last minute to keep the boat in shape and to bear my weight when I work around. Using an old piece of ply as a work floor.
Ground all that crappy glass off the transom and all the main bits of the old floor etc. Plooms of sparkeling dust blowing out the front and back of my carport. I hope none of my neighbors had thier washing out hehe.
