The propulsion had to cope with sand,weeds,mud and shingle and sudden beaching because the water could be muddy and it was not possible to see what was below.Light weight and low fuel consumption was a must.Good speed in very shallow water meant no pushing of the boat to find channels before the tide dropped to low.

The channels are hard to find and a drive needs to be safe from damage.Mud and shells and sand need to be no barrier.With a quick dropping tide there is no time to be stuck on a sand bar for long.

When you need to take your time and go slowly through shallow areas because if you speed the rocks are waiting unseen.Lift the drive to control forward speed.

When it comes to thick swamp grass and weeds it is tough going.This is no place for water jet propulsion which would block up solid.

When a grounding has occoured the drive can be held right up level with the keel and the boat driven to deep water.The action of the drive grounding is cam-like and the power of the propeller does not have to be overcome before the drive can lift,as with outboard or inboard/outboard.A water jet would suck onto the bottom and get clogged with weeds and sand.

Nice to have a boat that can take you camping,fishing and shooting or just a picknic in a remote place.And a boat that you can cook up in and have heating with out worries about gas fumes.
