Removing Pinstripes/polishing

Stipes on

This is the stipes on the boat originally.

The bottow was repaired by the previous owner

The bottom is very rough and needs a bit of care. I will be using some putty to smooth out the rough spots and will probably paint it with balck anti foul paint. Not because it will ever get fouled but, for the fact it is black and is made for boat bottoms.

Under the bottom most strake

From the strake at the top is good glass below is very rough stuff. I will either fill and sand or try to polish.

There is some gloss

There is still some gloss in the old girl! But still needs some TLC.

The KeelGuard installed

I installed the keel guard over some fresh epoxy. Epoxy was cured first. I then sanded and washed with acetone and installed per the instructions.

There are 6 seperate stripes

In the picture there are 6 seperate stripes!!! I had only 1 that was on top of another. I had a hard time getting these stripes off. I think it was they had dried in the sun as the bottom stripes were easier.

Tool of chioce

This was purchased at Harbor freight for 19 dollars! Am very happy with it. It makes stripe remove easier as does having finger nails. The plastic scraper I tried melted. :)

>>>Be careful!!!<<<
BURNED FINGERS HURT!

Pulling stripes

As you can see I can sometime pull more than 1. The issue i get was ever 4 or 5 inches there was a nick or cut in the stripe and thats all you get! So took a while to pull a stripe.

Some stripes removed

It was easier to remove 1 stripe at a time. But you had to come back and do the same thing again and again and....

Finally the stripe are gone

The stripes are finally gone but now I get a new problem. The glue is still there. Will need to get it off somehow.

The stripes have been removed

The easy way to remove the stripes is with a heatgun. A hair dryer works but is slower a lot slower. The Gelcoat is still dull.

Sticky dirt

This stuff is nasty and sticky. It is hard to pickup and throw away but I was happy to do so.

This is a different pile of debris

I had 4 piles of this stuff. They could have saved a few dollars if they had not gone so crazy with the pinstripes!!!

This is the rear side I did not compound

I have not done the starboard side yet.

This is the side before I coumpound

I have not done the starboard side yet.

This is the results after just a compound

I just wated to see how the compound would work.
I have not done the polishing yet. All I can say is OH MY!

This is the side after I coumpounded

I did the side and some of the glue is still there but it looks 50% better. I will be removing the stick tape reesidue and redoing the compounding.
