New engine controls

The old control

The old engine controls look terrible and work just about the same. It sticks and is touchy at low speeds.

Remove the cover

The baseplate cover removes easily by sliding it in two pieces to the sides. After that the mounting screws are accessible, as is the main screw connecting the control lever to the cables, behind the gunnel.

Pull out the wires

Once the screw was removed the lever pulled out easily and the electrical wires were revealed. There are wires for the neutral kill switch, trim and tilt.

Wire harness released

After removing all of the mounting screws, the cable harness dropped freely from the back side.

Detaching the cables

Using a pair of pliers, I detached the cables by removing the cotter pins holding them in place.

Removing the electrical connections

Quick connects made it very easy to remove the electrical connections. I labeled them to make sure that they didn't get mixed up.

Mounting the new cables

The cables mount easily into the new control harness, thanks to easy to use brackets that came with the new controls.

Mounting continued

The new cables connect easily, following the directions that came with the new controller. I have not adjusted the cable lengths at all. I won't be able to make any fine tuning adjustments until everything is fully installed.

Included brackets

The teleflex control kit came with universal brackets for the cable connections. Once the covers are attached, the cables are secure and good to go. The assembly is ready to be re-installed into the gunnel.

Another view

This is another view of the bracket and cables assembled.

Electrical wiring

There are three wires running from the old control lever to the various components of the boat. They are for the trim, tilt, and neutral kill switch. They connect easily to the new lever without any new wiring being necessary.

New controls installed and working

The new controls are installed and working, and they look great! The idle is running a little high, so I think it needs some fine tuning, but that's a project for another day. This new chrome controller, combined with they new grey carpet and two-toned upholstery looks pretty amazing. It's all starting to come together
